We Compared 75 Halloween Etsy Listings — Here’s What the Numbers Actually Show
We compared 75 live Etsy listings across Halloween mugs, sweatshirts and tote bags to see what competition and engagement actually show.
If you are planning Halloween products for Etsy, the obvious question is which type of product is most interesting to test.
MOOSIZE analysed 75 live Etsy listings across three product groups:
- 25 Halloween mugs
- 25 Halloween sweatshirts
- 25 Halloween tote bags
The results show why raw engagement totals can be misleading.
The live Etsy comparison
| Product | Listings analysed | Sampled favourites | Median favourites | Zero-favourite listings | Top listing share | Observed price range | MOOSIZE score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Halloween mugs | 25 | 3,352 | 1 | 8 | 90.3% | $7.95–$128.00 | 65 |
| Halloween sweatshirts | 25 | 324 | 1 | 7 | 55.1% | $18.00–$74.00 | 62 |
| Halloween tote bags | 25 | 93 | 1 | 10 | 35.5% | $6.00–$80.00 | 62 |
These figures describe the listings sampled by MOOSIZE during this research run. They do not represent every Etsy listing and should not be treated as sales figures.
Favourites are cumulative engagement signals, not confirmed purchases.
The mug number looks dominant — until you inspect it
Halloween mugs recorded 3,352 sampled favourites, more than ten times the sweatshirt sample and far above the tote-bag sample.
Looking only at that total could make mugs appear overwhelmingly stronger.
But one listing accounted for 3,026 favourites.
That means the highest-favourite mug listing represented 90.3% of the sampled mug engagement.
The other 24 mug listings therefore contributed only a small share of the total.
That concentration matters.
A seller looking only at aggregate favourites could reach a very different conclusion from someone looking at how engagement is distributed across the sample.
Sweatshirts showed a less concentrated pattern
The Halloween sweatshirt sample recorded 324 cumulative favourites.
Its leading listing accounted for 55.1% of sampled engagement.
That is still concentrated, but materially less concentrated than the mug sample.
Seven of the 25 sweatshirt listings had zero favourites in the collected sample.
The observed prices ranged from $18.00 to $74.00.
This does not establish sales performance or profitability. It does show that the sampled sweatshirt listings had a broader spread of engagement than the mug sample.
Tote bags had lower engagement, but less dependence on one listing
The Halloween tote-bag sample recorded 93 cumulative favourites.
Ten of the 25 analysed tote-bag listings had zero favourites.
The leading tote-bag listing accounted for 35.5% of total sampled engagement — substantially less concentration than either mugs or sweatshirts.
Observed prices ranged from $6.00 to $80.00.
Again, favourites do not tell us how many products were purchased. The useful observation is simply that sampled engagement was spread more evenly across the tote-bag group, even though its total was lower.
So which Halloween product would we test first?
The data does not justify declaring a guaranteed winner.
MOOSIZE scored:
- Halloween mugs: 65
- Halloween sweatshirts: 62
- Halloween tote bags: 62
All three therefore remained in TEST territory in this research run.
The mug sample produced the highest score, but its headline engagement figure was heavily influenced by one exceptional listing.
That means a sensible seller should not interpret the 3,352-favourite total as evidence that Halloween mugs broadly outperform the other product formats.
For a controlled test, the more useful question is:
Can you create a differentiated product that performs without depending on one exceptional outlier?
Based on this sample alone, mugs justify further investigation, while sweatshirts and tote bags remain credible comparison products worth testing.
What this tells Etsy sellers
This research highlights an important point about product validation:
Total engagement can hide the shape of a market.
Two niches can show similar totals but have very different distributions.
One might have engagement spread across many listings.
Another might be dominated by one unusually successful listing.
That is why MOOSIZE looks beyond a single headline number and considers factors such as:
- sampled engagement
- zero-engagement listings
- concentration among top listings
- price range
- product fit
- competition evidence
No one metric proves demand, sales or future profitability.
The purpose of the evidence is to help decide what deserves a controlled test before spending significant time or money on a product.
Next step
If you are considering a Halloween Etsy product, compare several product formats rather than relying on a single keyword or headline engagement figure.
Then test one differentiated concept with controlled cost and measure the actual result.
